BUILDING THE CITY
My role on this project was to design various sets seen in the world of Big Tree City, these would then be passed along to the 3D team who would build the sets following what's provided. My responsibilities also involved mapping out 3D sets, rough layouts in 3D, designing graphics and exploring colours/lighting.
Screenshots are used for reference, you can watch the whole show on Netflix
Graphics
Part of my role included designing the screens, art and posters around the city. These small details really help the city feel alive and real
I designed a multi-storey car park. For one of the episodes I got to return to this location and make a time trial for the team. The goal being. to rescue the civilian at the top
We needed a set for a situation where the museum and the baker have a chaotic mix up. There were plans to use the alleyway between as a side entrance to a secret storage room in the museum
We designed the sewers of BTC to be easily buildable by the 3D department like a puzzle system, with slight variation between them so it feels like it every corner they turn is new but also very easy to get lost in.
On the lowest level of HQ is a maze of servers leading to a mystery room with a powerful secret book
We designed the sewers of BTC to be easily buildable by the 3D department like a puzzle system, with slight variation between them so it feels like it every corner they turn is new but also very easy to get lost in.
Below are concepts for the Roller Rink in BTC. This was a fun episode because we got to explore the city at night. To make the city feel vibrant and buzzing we introduced a lot of neon signs and flashing lights.
The theme park was a set that the characters never really go into however it needed to look really fun and colourful to tempt Splash and Pecky.
I started with rough quick idea passes and then made a rough 3D mock-up using simple shapes. Once that was all set I developed the final design.
For a racing episode I designed and dressed the city for the event. Inspired by karting games, I created assets that could be placed around the city as well as planned the route of the race between sets.
